Submerged Special Reports

This is a mix of shipwreck-related research that I’ve done both in Devon and around the world about particular topics, rather than an individual wreck.

  • Tombstones
The history of many wrecks can be deciphered from forgotten tombstones in local graveyards. Here are some of the histories I’ve found
  • Submarines
The histories of several submarines lost around Devon and UBoats on display within Europe
  • The Ones That Got Away
  • Not every shipwreck is lost to the sea – some manage to be reclaimed. Here are the histories of several boats that came back.

  • Marine Archaeology
  • Some great wrecks can be found lovingly preserved in museums – here are some of the most interesting I’ve found

  • Bombs And Bullets
  • Diving around Plymouth is hard to avoid military ordinance, from cannonballs to artillery shells. Here’s a guide as to what to avoid handling…

  • Wreck Walks
  • Even if you can’t get in the water, there are fascinating wreck walks where you can see shipwreck history on land

  • South Africa
The Shipwreck Trail is a great way to explore South Africa’s stunning coastline

    For Linda Henk

HC sailed from Liverpool mid January for Naples and spent the next 2 moths transporting troops between North Africa, (Oran) and Naples – which was the main landing point and South of Anzio itself.

There were 2 sailings that fit your story: 17th February arriving 20th and 29th February, arriving 3rd March.

Hi Chris. I came across your father’s website by accident or my sheer luck. My father was on the Empire Harry and shipwrecked. That was all I have ever known, my heart missed a beat at the point I saw the photograph who someone else had sent in. My father is sat right next to him, bottom front right. Dad’s name is Charles Cawkwell. I have the very same photo with some writing on the back saying some names of the lads I was shipwrecked with. Thanks to your father’s legacy I now know the year, the place and that there still is wreckage. I would like to find out more about the Empire Harry, and the day it happened. If you have any suggestions it would be appreciated. Thank you Janice

The Hera: Is there anywhere a list of the names of (a) the 19 crew members who perished, and (b) the 5 survivors?
I have found an 8X10 color portrait of the ship among my deceased uncle’s things. His mother’s family were Norwegian, and I was wondering if perhaps he kept the picture because of a family connection to one of the crew?
